During my youth, gangs were bad but they were not nearly as organized or violent as those which would come to the fore during the 80's and 90's. At the end of the last century, entire neighborhoods were held hostage by the violent reality of lawlessness.
Perhaps the youth who made up the crips and bloods of the 90's had more at stake than the Blackstone Rangers who were prominent on the Southside of Chicago in the 60's. Many psychologists believe that the nature of gang life is highlighted by a need for family acceptance & Respect.
That view leaves a large unexplained gap of teens who had good families, who had working parents, and who had a secure home life. These gang members were drawn by money, excitement, or some other motivation.
No, I think the lure of gang life and mob life was the call of "organization". Secretly many of us cling to the hope that someone, somewhere, or somehow will organize the insnity which characterizes modern day life.
The pecking order and organization of a gang or the Capone mobsters of the prohibition, does exactly that. Believe it or not many men also find the same safety and direction when serving in the military. Others try to find this organization in cults or even in dysfunctional marriages.
Every generation of men and women seek a source that makes sense of life. God dispatched His only Son to lead the most successful organism for life ever conceived. It goes beyond organization because it was actually alive. This living thriving body is called the Church and it is the body of Christ on earth.
The Church gives us an understanding of our place in God's plan. With no human blueprint, the Church has expanded by Godly design to stand and deliver His message of hope, forgiveness, and justice. This God made entity exists to confront the "crypts" of hell with the "blood" of Jesus.
Gang members and mobsters usually undergo a painful initiation. Gangs call it "getting swole", in reference to the physical swelling that follows. But when you become a member of God's Army, you become a "copo" for good! However, unlike any gang, Jesus was already "swole" for you. Your initiation was already handled. He took the pain for you!
As a Christian, you have been commissioned to steal the enemies territory and assassinate his minions (spiritual minions NOT OTHER PEOPLE) with drive by prayer.
Gang members call doing gang business "putting in work". Let's put in some work today. We know our job. God's intent and organization is clear.
Pick an enemy stronghold and lets do a prayer drive by! You will be surprised by the result.
